(CBS) — Last night the world bid adieu to what many will and everyone should call an icon.
Comedy host of CBS’ “Late Show” David Letterman signed-off, marking the end of an era in television.

His final episode aired last night May 20, and to say goodbye, Letterman took us down memory lane with some fellow friends. Major appearances were made from celebrities like Chris Rock, Tina Fey, Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis Dreyfus, Barbara Walters, Bill Murray and many others as they recited Letterman’s last Top Ten List. There were skits, homages and spoofs referencing Letterman’s impact ion other cultural staples like “The Simpsons” and former presidents of the United States.
The Foo Fighters also performed as the last musical guests to rock the Ed Sullivan stage. And one of the great moments of the night was seeing David Letterman give his blessing to Stephen Colbert, who will be taking the helm of the “Late Show” later this year.

Letterman’s exit from late night television was one met with a mix of emotions that can only summed up as bittersweet. Leading up to the final episode, other late-night host shared their stories on how Letterman influenced them as well as innovated the late-night genre.
